KWV Cathedral Cellar 100 Minutes Tour

Explore the rich history of KWV’s Cathedral Cellar

South Africa is home to some of the biggest wine vats in the world, which stands guarded underneath the impressive vaulted roof of KWV’s Cathedral Cellar. These vats, which have illustrations of the history of the SA wine industry carved on them, can be viewed during an exclusive tour of KWV’s cellar facilities. Recently KWV has extended its guided tours with a focused journey which explores KWV’s 100 Years of Excellence.

KWV in Paarl was established in 1918 and is home to a tapestry of rich stories – all woven into the DNA of the wines and brandies produced here. As part of its centennial milestone, this new guided tour, called 100 Years in 100 Minutes, allows wine and history lovers rare insights into these stories.

This specialised tour commences at KWV’s ‘cellar door’, the KWV Emporium, where guests are greeted with a taste of the limited edition KWV Centenary Méthode Cap Classique, a 2011 Blanc de Blanc that has been made in the French Champagne method and which has been especially disgorged for KWV after having spent 72 months on the lees.

Reflecting on the past and appreciating the present, this tour includes rare footage of the ‘legends of KWV,’ reflecting on the formative role KWV has played in their careers. From here the guided tour takes visitors through KWV’s maturation cellar, and into the ‘womb’ of KWV, the Cathedral Cellar. Here, guests will enjoy a tasting of KWV’s premium wines – including a rarely opened KWV 1949 Ruby Port, widely considered as one of South Africa’s finest examples of fortified port-style wines, with a price tag of R 6 000.

The KWV 100 Years in 100 Minute tours run daily at 09:45 and 14:00 and costs R100 per person and can be booked by contacting the KWV Emporium on http://www.kwvwineemporium.co.za/experiences/tours, on wineemporium@kwv.co.za or 021 807 3007/8.
